Lake Petenwell was created by the Wisconsin River Power Company in the late 1940's by damming the Wisconsin River. At 23,000 acres, Lake Petenwell is Wisconsin's 2nd largest lake and provides all sorts of recreational opportunities. The lake is so large it borders 3 different counties, Wood, Juneau, and Adams Counties. With it's abundance of water, firm sandy bottom, several parks, protected bays, and 5 waterfront restaurants, there is something for everyone. The lake has over 100 miles of shoreline, approximately half of which is protected from development. Most of the development on the lake has been since 2000 and many of the lots are much larger than your traditional lake lot at 2+ acres in size. While still being mostly an undiscovered gem, Lake Petenwell is perfectly located just 40 minutes north of the Wisconsin Dells, and within approximately 3 hours of Chicago, Milwaukee, Madison, and the Twin Cities.
Boating is phenomenal for all recreational activities such as sailing, pontooning, riding wave runners, kite surfing, pleasure boating, and fishing. At 14 miles long, 6 miles wide at the widest point, and another 5 miles of boating north of the lake on the Wisconsin River, you will never get bored exploring. The sunsets are some of the most stunning around and many people enjoy an evening sunset cruise on their boat. Sailing regattas originating out of the Barnum Bay Marina are common as are professional jet ski races at the Lure. With many quiet bays and inlets along the lakes beautiful wooded shoreline, tranquility and solitude are always easy to find on Lake Petenwell. Many beaches line the shoreline of Lake Petenwell and a couple popular sand bars on the river north of the lake make for a great meeting spot for friends. While heading north on the river keep your eye open for the occasional rope swing. Whether you want great home made pizza, listen to a live band, play a game of volleyball, or grab some surf and turf at the Dirty Oar Supper Club, there are restaurants and establishments for everyone.
Lake Petenwell provides great fishing opportunities for Smallmouth Bass, Crappie, White Bass, Walleye, Northern Pike, Muskie, and Catfish. Several large, national fishing tournaments are hosted on the lake each year and the early spring Walleye Days attracts people from all over the midwest. Several local fishing guides are available to help you learn the lake and show you the ins and outs of trolling, jigging, learning the structure or even ice fishing.
Whether you are searching for a lake house or a vacant lot to build your future cabin on, Lake Petenwell is the perfect setting for your lakeside family retreat and will provide you with many years of enjoyment.
